From my kitchen to yours

Holidays = cooking = I should go to the gym but I won’t. With that attitude in mind, I’ve taken the month of December by storm. Like a starved person seeking to devour any and all sugary, cheesy, fatty foods, I took it upon myself to make all the delicious dishes that made me drool … and there were many. But as I found myself flipping through recipes and shaking my head at the amount of butter needed (thanks Paula) I also figured out a sad truth … just like with make up, a girl needs many, MANY tools to cook, especially if you’re trying to make something extra fancy. That’s how I found myself at Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Target, Kmart, Williams-Sonoma, Sur La Table and God knows how many other stores and websites. So many options … so little time.

To some, kitchen appliances are not the most exciting thing to shop for, but I’m definitely not one of those people. Though cooking tools are pretty standard, there were still a few “they make that?” moments and sadly even more “what exactly does this do?” moments. These are some of the goodies I found that made my kitchen more useful and my cooking even more fun.

Lasagna edge pan: I love the crunchy edges of a lasagna, mostly because that’s where the cheese gets the crispiest. Yum!  This gives you like 4 or 5 times the amount of edges. They make it for brownies too, but I’m not a fan of crunchy brownies. (Who is?)

Whoopie Pie Pan: Maybe these delicious sandwiches are named so in honor of the excitement you feel when you see them and realize you’re going to eat them. I made my own red velvet, cream cheese version for our Christmas party and they tasted amazing. This little pan will make sure all your whoopies are exactly the same perfectly rounded size, and will make the end product seem even more professional.

Egg PoachPod: This little guy is made of high quality silicone to resist heat or damage and it’s a super easy way to poach your eggs! Just crack your egg right into the pod, set in a pot of boiling water and Voilà – le poach egg.

Kuhn Rikon Frosting Decorating Pen: The easiest way to decorate your cakes, cupcakes, cookies and bodies (J/k). This nifty battery-operated pen comes with three frosting cartridges, one color mixer, five decorating tips and a nozzle for filling cupcakes. (Score)

Egg N Time: Hmm.. this was definitely part of my ” What exactly does this do” moment. Turns out it’s an egg holder and timer. You put your eggs on it (like an egg seat belt if you will) and insert the mysterious device in a pan filled with water. Then the timer will let you know when they’re ready. This is needed in case you think your eggs are going to try to escape their boiling scolding death and climb out of the pan, and even more importantly, in case you can’t keep track of time.
